Help Save the wildlife and bushlands in Campbelltown

We started this page in the hopes to raise awareness for our local wildlife and help protect them in their natural habitat in surrounding areas. Our first sighting of a koala (Alexis) gave us the idea of creating the page as we had no idea we had wildlife so close to home. The page was created back in 2013 when we met Alexis for the first time. The page is to help raise awareness, support our wildlife with developments etc, inform the community of what is going on around them and how they can help but most importantly we are here to be the voices for the wildlife.

• Previously a volunteer at Walkabout park Somersby.

Our page came into being to strive to increase awareness revolving around the issues relating to koala conservation care and education .Furthermore our page plans to provide a platform from which koala charities can publish relevant information. Indeed our page is also ideal for koala lovers and carers to express their opinions and concerns and to raise much needed funds considering koala charities receive no government support. Our page ,which has world wide support, has already achieved marked success in raising funds and awareness for a number of koala charities. Our page does not receive any funds directly, but as stated we do provide an opportunity for the public to donate directly to the charity of their choice. In essence our page can unite koala lovers to organisations that do not have access to funding or the capacity to canvass big business. We follow koala charities who rescue and rehabilitate sick, injured or distressed koalas back to the wild. Our page addresses all the issues, the good, the bad and the ugly but never overlooking the plain fact that the koala is overwhelmingly loveable and cute.

Finally we will always endeavour to support other not for profit koala platforms.

Port Stephens Koalas

Port Stephens Koalas was established in 2016.  This organisation is the new embodiment of the Hunter Koala Preservation Society (HKPS) formed in June 1987.

The name change of our organisation became necessary as technology advanced and people outside the Hunter Valley interested in our koalas, misinterpreted “Hunter” as meaning that we are “hunting” koalas, when our intentions are about “saving” koalas.  Statutory obligations had also progressed so greatly that a new constitution was necessary.  Further, to raise more funds to support our work, the Society needed to gain Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status through the Register of Environmental Organisations (REO).  The Society is now a company limited by guarantee and well placed for the future.

The main impetus for our formation was the continual threat to koalas from impending development and the resultant loss of their habitat.  The Society maintains a comprehensive data base of sick and injured koalas’ statistics going back to 1995 which assists in identifying accurately where this unique Australian marsupial lives.

Port Stephens Koalas is determined to establish a Koala Hospital facility to help rehabilitate sick, injured and orphaned koalas in order to return them to the wild, as well as educating many more people about the need to preserve the precious habitat of Port Stephens koalas and other wildlife.  Our aim is for koalas to return to their natural habitat, reproduce, and live a happy life after rehabilitation.
